What we are about

We are four friends, two couples that share a common interest in a sustainable and affordable way of life. Not just for ourselves but sharing our experience with those who are interested.

The gentleman that we are buying the land from is telling everyone that "a bunch of Hippies" are moving in up there." We hope that is not the general idea. Scott owns a local health food store, Great Grains Health Foods and has long been interested in building an "Earth Ship". His partner, Karla is a registered nurse and had trouble with the concept of living in a hole in the ground, surrounded by tires. Tucker and Glenna are artists and co-owners of jabberwocky studio and have become interested through their friendship with Scott and Karla. In May of 2007 we all loaded up in Karla's Chevy an left Miles City, Montana to spend a couple of days in an Earth Ship community, North of Taos, New Mexico. That was a wonderful experience for all and I will share more of that with you with this site.

On our way home we began discussing "Straw Bale" building as Scott had some experience in that area. We decided that another journey was in our future and signed up for a one day workshop. Pipestone Pass between Whitehall and Butte, Montana was only a few hours away and we had friends to stay with for the night so off we went to Sage Mountain for what turned out to be a day well spent.

What we have learned from the knowledgable people that have shared their experience, wisdom and hard work with us, is what we hope we can impart to you so that we may reduce our footprint on this wonderful planet that we call home and share with one another.

Join us on our journey

Join us and follow along as we build our small community. Learn how to turn waste into building materials and help us in our quest to attain a sustainable future.

View from Playa Del Sol across the Yellowstone River

This is the view looking west from our property towards the town of Kinsey. This is a fertile irrigated valley and gave us the idea for the name of our first straw bale structure, Playa Del Sol, Valley of the Sun.
